Situation:
Indian Capital Markets performance over last 12 years can be segregated into three broad phases. From 2003 till 2008 markets boomed with an approximate return of 500% on Nifty futures, however in the next 5 year period markets tasted a low of more than 50% from its previous all time highs. Since the inception of Modi Wave which started in later part of 2013, Nifty has till now given exceptional returns and currently stands at approximately 200% and analysis suggest another 200-400% returns in next 2 years of the Nifty bull run.
However such an exceptional performance has considerably failed to develop the interest of Indian investors over the past few years. Indian investors are the largest population who have the highest saving percentage in the entire world yet very minimum part in capital markets. Currently only 18 million (1.8 crore) DEMAT ACCOUNTS are held out of a total population of over 120 crores. Due to the recent success of Indian stock markets it is expected that another 20 million DEMAT Accounts are expected to open by the end of FY17.
Problem:
The main reason for such a low participation of retail investors in Indian stock markets is lack of education and skills required to make the maximum out of this phenomena. Very few retail investors have tried their hands in stock markets but have only got their hands dirty due to the same reason. They have suffered losses in past which has also led to wide distrust among potential investors because of bad word of mouth. In simpler words, let me put it this way; people enter the markets when markets are trading at highs and get out of their investments when markets crash. It should simply be the other way around, people should enter when markets fear further crash after a good market crash and exit the same when markets feel greedy. Investors who lose money do not accept this fact that they entered the markets at wrong time instead they blame markets or its participants for their losses thereby spreading bad word.
